シンガポールを拠点に活動するアトリエ・ホコ（Atelier HOKO）が手がける出版シリーズ『Science of the Secondary』。本シリーズは、りんごやコップ、時計といった、私たちの日常生活に存在するごく身近な事物や現象に焦点を当て、人間とそれらとの関係性を細やかに観察し、探求するプロジェクトです。第18号のテーマは「枕」。日本語訳冊子が付属します。

「眠ることを楽しむ大多数の人々にとって生活における第一の必需品である枕は、すべての人にとっての基本的な支えであり、時にはベッドを持たない人々にとって唯一の慰めとなります。枕を享受し体験することは、健全かつ急ぐことなく、ほとんどの人にとって馴染み深いものであるため、これ以上議論したり、特段の関心を向けるべき対象と見なす必要はないと、ごく自然に考えられるかもしれません。そのような見方をするのは、ある夜に寝返りを打ちながら、なぜ容易に眠りにつけないのかと驚き、憤る自分に気づくその瞬間まで、私たちの日常の機微に全くの無知である人々でしょう……。」

"As a first necessity of life to the great mass of those who enjoy sleeping, the pillow is a basic support for all and occasionally the sole comfort for those without a bed. It might naturally be supposed that the enjoyment and experience of a pillow, wholesomely and without haste, would be familiar to most and has no need to be further discussed nor considered an object of peculiar interest. Such is the view amongst persons who are entirely ignorant of our everyday subtleties until they find themselves one night, tossing and turning, alarmed and angered as to why sleep does not come easily..."

‘Science of the Secondary: Pillow’ is the 18th edition in the series of ongoing research conceived and developed by Atelier HOKO.

The publication series Science of the Secondary is produced by the Singapore-based Atelier HOKO. This series is a project that focuses on the highly familiar objects and phenomena present in our daily lives—such as an apple, a cup, or a clock—closely observing and exploring the relationships between humans and these subjects.

Atelier HOKO (2002) is an independent creative practice that focuses on the study of the growing disengagement between people, things and space. The atelier hopes to cultivate in people, an open-ness and ability to un-know, bringing about a heightened curiosity towards all phenomena by taking a fresh look at reality. Founded by Alvin Ho and Clara Koh.
