ベルリンを拠点に活動するコモン・インプリント（Common Imprint）は、デザイナーのサム・キム（Sam Kim）によって設立された、アジアの出版文化を多角的に考察するリサーチプラットフォームです。彼らのスタジオに併設されたリーディングルームには、1,000冊を超えるアジアの独立出版物が所蔵されており、誰もが訪れることができるライブラリーとして一般に公開されています。

本作『50 selected books from Asia』は、その膨大なコレクションの中から精選された50冊をまとめた目録です。表紙に引用されたヤン・チヒョルト（Jan Tschichold）のテキストを手引きに、「Typesettings in CJK（中日韓のタイポグラフィ）」や「Uncommon Binding（特徴的な製本）」といった5つのカテゴリーを通じて、その輪郭を浮かび上がらせます。Mediabus（韓国）やTemporary Press（シンガポール）、Jiazazhi Press（中国）、Neutral Colors（日本）など、各地の独立出版社による実践を記録しながら、これらの蔵書をベルリンで一般に開放するコモン・インプリントの活動そのものを垣間見ることができる一冊です。

Based in Berlin, Common Imprint is a research platform founded by designer Sam Kim to explore Asian publishing culture from multifaceted perspectives. Their studio houses a reading room containing over 1,000 independent Asian publications, which is open to the public as a library for all to visit.

50 selected books from Asia is a catalogue featuring fifty titles carefully selected from this extensive collection. Taking a text by Jan Tschichold quoted on the cover as a point of reference, the book delineates the character of these works through five categories, including ‘Typesettings in CJK’ and ‘Uncommon Binding’. While documenting the practices of independent publishers across the region—such as Mediabus (South Korea), Temporary Press (Singapore), Jiazazhi Press (China), and Neutral Colors (Japan)—this volume also offers a glimpse into the activities of Common Imprint as they share their archive with the public in Berlin.
