The theme of Issue 9 is the “One Man Foundry,” which refers to a setup where one typeface designer is not only designing typefaces but also handling distribution. Instead of focusing on type design and the process thereof, the main interest of this issue lies in typeface distribution after design, featuring three typeface designers who independently distribute their products through their own websites.
Amid the growth of digital technology, digital typefaces are now developed by global IT companies rather than traditional typeface foundries. As the environment has greatly changed from that characterizing traditional type-founding and the traditional concept of a foundry transforms, how do these designers sell or distribute their typefaces in their own ways? Through insightful interviews and rich visual references, this issue unpacks their unique approaches.
