2024年9月から12月にかけてイタリアの「The American Academy in Rome」で開催された展覧会「Artists Making Books: Pages of Refuge」に合わせて刊行された作品集。

同展覧会は、エド・ルシェ（Ed Ruscha）が2001年に同アカデミーに滞在した際、図書館に寄贈した書籍を起点として企画されたもの。ソル・ルウィットやマン・レイ、エルスワース・ケリー、パブロ・ピカソ、アンリ・マティスなど、20世紀初頭から現代の実践に至るまで、アーティストによって構想され、制作された100冊以上の書籍を紹介しています。

本書は、アーティストがいかに書籍というメディアの物質性を捉え、素材や形態を再構想してきたかを紐解きます。また、書籍が商業的制約に抗う手段であり、「避難所（refuge）」として機能する側面にも言及。収録されたインタビューと論考を通じて、本がアーティストと読者の間に築く関係性を探求し、今日におけるアーティストブックの文化的意義を、芸術的実践と構造の両面から考察した一冊です。
