This publication showcases the work of Korean graphic designer Shin Donghyeok. In this project, Shin merges the phonetic qualities of Hangul with the structural logic of the musical staff to create a unique typeface titled 신양장표음 Phonogram. Designed to function both visually and musically, this innovative system unites letterforms and musical scales into a singular typographic expression. The typeface adheres to a specific set of rules: it must function as a legible script, be based on the five-line musical staff, and be capable of producing sound in real time upon input. The result is a system comprising approximately 1,500 glyphs, including Hangul, Roman letters, and symbols, each mapped to a corresponding musical note. A dedicated web interface allows users to experience this synthesis of sound and script firsthand—typing on a keyboard simultaneously generates both text and sound. The URL to this interactive platform is included at the end of the book, offering readers an immersive exploration into the fusion of typography and music.
