POST opened in Ebisu, Tokyo, in 2011, as a bookshop specializing in art books. We have run the shop in a format where, at regular intervals, we change the books in the shop and present the work of a single publisher at a time. Rather than individual titles, we wanted to show the work of a publisher as a whole—its editing, design, printing and binding, and its collaborations with artists and designers—over that period. We continue this as one way of distributing books.
We began with Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König in Germany, and have since presented about 50 publisher features. Some of these publishers, like Phaidon, Thames & Hudson, Aperture, and Gestalten, are internationally known houses; others, like The Eriskay Connection and Nazraeli Press, are independent imprints run by artists, designers, or individuals; and still others, like Book Works and AA Publications, are publishers rooted in non-profit organizations or educational institutions. They are based in many countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
This book compiles a record of every publisher featured since 2011, arranged in the chronological order in which they were presented. Each feature includes images of the books introduced, along with captions and commentary. Between the features, we have inserted texts that trace, in five-year intervals, the shifting landscape of the art book since 2000. The book is structured so that it serves not only as an introduction to each publisher, but also so that, by following the pages in sequence, the reader can glimpse, indirectly, how the art book has changed over these 15 years.
