オランダのアーティストで元医師のエリック・リーバー（Erik Lieber）の作品集。

中古のスナップ写真が並ぶオークションサイトを閲覧中に偶然購入した最初の5枚の写真は、その後10年間で929枚にまでのぼるアマチュア写真のコレクションへと発展することになります。本書は、作者が「orphan snapshots」と呼ぶ、出所不明の個人写真で構成されています。そこに写っているのは、ある日本人の母と娘。彼女たちは、世界数十箇所の観光名所の中でポーズをとっており、二人が撮影される際の反復的なスタイルがこのコレクションを特徴付けています。

一枚一枚はどこにでもある平凡な家族写真に見えますが、コレクションの全体像に目を向けたとき、あまりにも多くのものが見えないままであることに気がつきます。元の持ち主の手を離れ、個人的なものから公的なものへと変わったスナップ写真は、多くの場合文脈情報が失われています。この「文脈情報の欠如」が、見る者に想像力を働かせ、コレクションに個人的な意味を与え、さらには自分自身の記憶を問い直し、修正することさえ促します。本書は、ある種の「メメント・モリ（死を想え）」を秘めた、セルフイメージの儚さについての連想や問いを投げかけます。再発見されたこれらの写真は新しい命を与えられ、再解釈に対して開かれています。ブックデザインはオランダのグラフィックデザイナー、ジェレミー・ヤンセン（Jeremy Jansen）による。

While browsing an auction site full of second-hand snapshots, Erik Lieber (NL) bought the first five images of what would grow into a collection of 929 amateur snapshots over the next ten years. 'Monumental Moments' consists of anonymous private prints, which he calls ‘orphan snapshots’. They show an unknown Japanese ‘Mom’ and ‘Girl’. The collection is almost entirely defined by the repetitive manner in which both women were photographed, preferably in or near tourist attractions. Each picture looks like an ordinary family snapshot. But the more the collection grew, the more questions it raised. 'Monumental Moments' evokes associations and questions about the transience of self-images. Is this perhaps a memento mori? Designed by Jeremy Jansen.
