アーカイブを基盤としたストーリーテリングと少部数出版を実践する、ブリュッセル在住の写真家マティス・ドス・サントス(Mathys Dos Santos)のクリエイティブ・ディレクションのもと制作されました。
A publication by Bidules, an eyewear shop based in Brussels, Belgium, dedicated to sourcing and restoring vintage and deadstock frames.
Initiated in 2018, this project collects and documents materials and fragments of the eyewear industry through a blend of photography and scanography. The book features a diverse array of industrial traces related to eyewear: from 19th-century spectacles crafted from horn, wood, and bone, and 1970s medical textbooks illustrating ocular cross-sections and macular degeneration, to factory manuals for lens polishing machines, depictions of glasses in classical paintings, components unearthed in the Jura region (Morez and Oyonnax)—the historic heartland of French spectacle manufacturing—and vintage advertisements from global lens manufacturers such as Essilor and Zeiss.
Situated at the intersection of visual culture, industrial design, daily life, science, photography, and manufacturing, the book highlights the rich cultural and historical landscape existing on the periphery of the trade. It was produced under the creative direction of Mathys Dos Santos, a Brussels-based photographer whose practice focuses on archival storytelling and small print-run publishing.
