To create ‘Dictionary’, Anne Geene teamed up with fellow Dutch photographer Arjan de Nooy to combine a list of the 200 most commonly used English words with 200 “random” images from their archives. On each right-hand page, a word is randomly paired with a photograph. The pages are then perforated between the picture and the word, giving the reader the ability to link every word with every picture, thus opening up myriad possibilities for visual and linguistic interpretation. This extensive process of documenting, collecting, organizing, and editing a vast archive of ordinary plants acts as a tribute to flora in all their appearances, expressing the remarkable beauty found in the everyday. In the artist’s work, the photograph itself is rarely the focus. Taken out of context, the pictures are often nothing more than a registration of an unremarkable fact. Her art is, therefore, constituted by the formation of new images through the act of documenting, organizing, and arranging them in relation to one another. This process resulted in the selection of 225 books, with page 225 of each book reproduced. This collection reflects the diversity of the books held at the KB.
